God's Light To Guide Us In The Future

The future is a dark place, a place we cannot see. In the same way that darkness hides the path we need to follow, the future is a place hidden from us. We cannot see the path, we can only move forward one step at time, with our limited experience dimly showing a way forward.

But, God knows the future because he lives in eternity. God exists outside of the timeline of history. He inserts himself into the events of history at any place he chooses. For this reason, we can trust the guidance of God in our lives. The future is not dark to him. This is one aspect of the truth that "God is light; in him there is no darkness at all." (1 John 1:5)

Following God means having someone who can shine a light onto the path to the future. God's very presence is a light. To anyone who desires guidance from God, Jesus Christ is the light of the world. Knowing Christ as our Saviour gives us confidence for the future because we know that he is already there and can lead us on the right path.

Jesus also said that his followers are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14-16). The knowledge of who Christ is, and through him knowing God the Father, is light in a world of spiritual darkness. God is also the light of moral perfection. This is contrasted with the moral darkness of sin. Those who walk in the light acknowledge their own sin and accept Jesus as their Saviour. They are counted as righteous and given the gift of eternal life.

But, not everyone walks in the light. Another aspect of light is that it exposes everything. The light of God exposes the moral darkness in each of us. Those who reject the moral light of God come to hate the light, because it reveals their sinfulness. (John 3:20) God's light shows us the truth about our sinful nature. We then have a decision to make: either reject what the light reveals about our sinfulness and die in darkness; or acknowledge the light, accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour, and receive eternal life. Light or darkness - you decide.        Pastor Daniel Rhodes
