A Living God Who Has Conquered Death

Throughout history the Lord has always revealed himself to mankind as the living God. In the Garden of Eden, he spent time with Adam and Eve, and developed a close relationship with them. Even after they sinned by disobeying him, he still sought them out. Adam and Eve knew by personal experience that the Lord was the living God.

Cain and Abel interacted directly with God, as well. God spoke with Cain concerning Abel's death. There could be no doubt in Cain's mind that God was real and living. (Cain simply rebelled against God's authority.) Enoch had an especially close relationship with God. The Scriptures say "Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him." (Genesis 5:24). Seth, Noah, Shem, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph; all the patriarchs experienced a real relationship with the living God.

The book of Job is the oldest book in the Bible, written at or before the time of Abraham. It records the testimony of Job concerning his relationship with God in Job 19:25-27. "I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes - I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!" Here Job declares his faith and his confident expectation of resurrection. Though Job live 4,000 to 4,500 years ago, he possessed a well-informed, sophisticated theology. He believed in a living God; one who is loving, gracious, and merciful. Job knew the living God as his personal Redeemer (Savior), and by faith believed that he would be resurrected and see God with his own eyes.

As the focus of God's plan of salvation, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the fulfilment in history of what God had always taught mankind. God offers forgiveness of sin by grace, through faith. God's justice requires the penalty for sin to be paid with a blood sacrifice. Jesus Christ became the perfect and final sacrifice by his death on the cross. He then conquered death by his resurrection.                    Pastor Daniel Rhodes
